Overview

St Vincent’s Clinic Foundation was the vision of Sr Mary Bernice Elphick RSC and the founding Doctors of St Vincent’s Clinic. They believed clinical research and education were essential to  high quality patient care. With this vision always in mind, the Foundation has been an outstanding
success.

Established in 1992, the St Vincent's Clinic Foundation has strengthened the research and educational aims of the Clinic through providing funds and support for medical research into matters of clinical significance as well as providing support for public and medical education.

To date, over $7.79 million has been provided to support more than 164 innovative research and education projects on the St Vincent’s Campus including vital research into disease and illness including:

  • Adult Stem Cell Research

  • Alzheimer’s Disease

  • Arthritis

  • Asthma

  • Cancer (Prostate, Breast, Colon and Pancreatic)

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

  • Depression and Suicide

  • Diabetes

  • Heart Disease

  • Liver Disease

  • Obesity

  • Pain

  • Pulmonary Disease

Additionally, the Foundation supports research into the function of genes and cellular activities in the development and progression of diseases or illness as well as the multi-disciplinary grants.

The Foundation is proud to be able to provide financial assistance to medical students who wish to undertake research whilst they are studying and to provide a travelling scholarship for recent graduates to travel for a period of time overseas whilst furthering their studies.

Integral to the Darlinghurst Campus are the services and facilities provided by the St Vincent's Clinic and the St Vincent's Clinic Foundation.  Along with patient care and medical teaching, clinical research is one of the aims of the St Vincent's Clinic.

Every advance in medical science has started with a commitment by a medical practitioner or scientist to alleviate the pain and suffering of humankind.  It is here that St Vincent's Clinic Foundation plays its role in medicine today.

Australia is rich in research bodies striving within the clinical laboratory setting, investigating the causes of disease.  However, funding is sparse for the establishment and carrying out of studies conducted in the course of patient care.  This is where St Vincent's Clinic Foundation can focus some of the community's goodwill.

Already, the Foundation has successfully supported vital research into disease and illness including cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease, to name just a few.
