Clinical Haematology

The Department of Haematology and Blood Stem Cell Transplantation provides a comprehensive service in consultative, therapeutic and diagnostic Haematology.

The service has particular expertise in the use of Blood Stem Cell Transplantation. The service is accredited by the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry to carry out unrelated allogeneic transplants.  It hosts the Australasian Bone Marrow Recipient Registry, which collects data on all the Blood Stem Cell Transplants carried out in Australia and New Zealand.

The service has an active clinical and laboratory research program. It conducts fundamental research and clinical trials in blood diseases and blood related cancers. The objective is to be an internationally recognised unit for facilitating the rapid transfer of new discoveries to patient care and for disseminating health education and worth of medical research to the public. The highlights currently are the study of plasticity of bone marrow derived stem cells, the development of a gene chip facility and the investigation of the diagnostic values of genetic and coagulation tests for thromboembolism.

Other areas of expertise include HIV/AIDS related cancers, thrombosis and haemostasis, anticoagulation therapies and apheresis.

Country clinics are run in Wagga Wagga and Griffith on a monthly basis.
