The Travelling Fellowship
St Vincent’s Clinic Foundation provides financial support to St Vincent’s Hospital or St Vincent’s Private Hospital Medical Departments to support a recent graduate to study overseas to further their studies. Overseas study provides vital experience for the individual doctor and brings benefits to the St Vincent’s Campus and Australia.
Study has been carried out at prestigious institutions such as University of Calgary, University College London Hospital, Cambridge University, Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Cambridge), John Hopkins University Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
The Fellowship is in honour of deceased Medical Practitioners who have practised in St Vincent's Clinic. Preferences for granting the Award will be based on the post graduate merit of the study being undertaken and the work that has been done by the applicant at St Vincent's Campus. Preference may be given, wherever appropriate, for work that is likely to be continued, on the completion of travel, at St Vincent's Campus.

Multi-Disciplinary Patient-Focussed Research Grants
In 2007, the Foundation Trustees approved funding to support Multi-Disciplinary Patient-Focussed Research Grants. These grants have a clinical focus.
A multidisciplinary patient–focussed project must:
-
be multidisciplinary (ie medical, nursing and allied health)
-
have a focus on improving patient outcomes
-
be able to be completed within a 12 month timeframe
-
be undertaken on the St Vincent’s Campus
The Trustees see these grants as assisting to promote continuous quality improvement and clinically based research which will enhance patient care and outcomes.

Adult Stem Cell Research
Following a generous donation from the David Family, the St Vincent’s Clinic Foundation was able to apply over $1,000,000 ($1 million) of funding for Adult Stem Cell Research in the period 2002 - 2005.
The $1 million was applied to three major projects over a three-year period (2002-2005):
-
"G-CSF-mobilised autologous endothelial progenitor cells for refractory ischaemic heart disease" headed by Prof Robert Graham at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute
-
"Isolation, characterisation and application of adult olfactory neuronal stem cells" headed by Prof John Shine at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research
-
"Potential of human adult stem cells as treatment for Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis" headed by Profs Bruce Brew and David Ma at St Vincent's Hospital.
In addition to funding these three major research projects, the Foundation funded initial staffing costs for the newly established Flow Cytometry Laboratory (a collaboration between St Vincent’s Hospital, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Victor Change Cardiac Research Institute) and funds for the initial establishment of a new laboratory to study the survival, migration and differentiation of endogenous neural progenitors for therapy of neurodegenerative disease.
Research in this area is cutting edge and has the potential to provide the basis for major scientific breakthroughs and the development of new treatments.
St Vincent’s Clinic Foundation has continued to support ongoing research in this area.
2008 - Prof Robert Graham (Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute) $100,000
“G-CSF in Angina patients with ischaemic heart disease to stimulate neovascularisation-GAIN II”
2009 - Prof Richard Harvey (Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute) $100,000
“Reprogramming of pluripotent cells from adult cardiac stem cells in vitro without genetic modification”
2010 - Dr John Moore (Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute) $100,000
“T-lymphocyte developmental restrictions of Adult Haematopoietic Stem Cells – relevance to transplantation and autoimmune disease”
